Insurance industry statistics show that people in all but the heaviest SUVs have higher death rates in single-vehicle accidents, mostly due to vehicle rollover. Rollovers accounted for more than 10,000 fatalities in the United States in 1999, which is more than side and rear impact crashes combined. SUV rollovers accounted for 36% of all fatal crashes in the year 2000.

Tire manufacturers have known that a leading cause of tire tread or belt separation is due to the design and placements of the belts and overlying tread. Tread and belt separations can occur due to poor adhesion of the components from the use of old and expired adhesives, curing at improper temperatures, unclean manufacturing facilities or foreign objects in the tires such as rust, moisture, oxidation, grease and sawdust.
